standardized: a reading series

An ongoing series focused on nurturing playwrights and screenwriters by providing them with a developmental space to hear their work in the company of an audience read by a cast of professional actors that we provide. For the readings we select new, previously unproduced works that speak to the standard aesthetic -- art that is dynamic, diverse, intelligent and provocative -- based on criteria of current artistic merit and future promise. The readings include the opportunity for a talk back followed by a reception for artists and audience alike.

the standard salon

A gathering for artists to share thoughts, reflections and ideas through targeted discussion on topics of interest to our community. The salon is moderated by a standard member who helps to guide the discussion. Drinks and refreshments provide for a casual atmosphere, where ideas can flow and the mind can be inspired.

standard outreach

Outreach is the standard’s mechanism for giving back to the broader community, with a particular focus on reaching young people through the arts. Our goals are to help educate and inspire young people to broaden there artistic minds, think in creative ways, and to develop an appreciation for all of the arts.

In the spring of 2009 the group conducted a 4 week workshop at P.S. 75 in Manhattan. Each week the group would read books aloud to the children and have them engage in theater games that coinsided with the story’s lesson for the day. On the final day of the workshop the children collectively retold a story through the theater techniques they had been learning. We want to thank Mrs. Benelly and her class for such a wonderful experience.

the standard Xchange

A means of engaging with other groups, companies and spaces through a bartering system such as with the Centerstage Project, where in exchange for hands-on work renovating their facilities, we receive free studio space for our programs and events.
